Red Shambhala: Magic, Prophecy, and Geopolitics in the Heart of Asia by Andrei Znamenski was recently reviewed by Nicholas Colloff in the Golgonooza blog.  Colloff states:

Emerging from the book, I realised how fluid the first era of the Russian revolutionary period was and how in that fluidity, people both projected their own aspirations and sought to manipulate events in often quite remarkable ways and how in the second phase such diversity, occasional imagination and much fantasy was extinguished.

I, also, was reminded that in times of great uncertainty people are deeply vulnerable to ideological manipulation; and, as we appear to be in one of those phases of history, a radically unsettling one, sadly, we can expect the same to be true, no doubt in very different guises.

The Magonia Review of Books has reviewed Andrei Znamenski’s new book Red Shambhala: Magic, Prophecy, and Geopolitics in the Heart of Asia.

The insightful review, written by Peter Rogerson, reads:

This book vividly demonstrates the power of the irrational in politics, and the subterranean forces which can operate below the surface rationality of the world. It makes one wonder who may still be playing some version of the great game with dreams and visions. Nor can we assume that the vision of the Shambhala jihad is forever now safely spiritualised. Who knows what some post-Dalai Lama Tibetan resistance movement might evoke in their liberation struggle against China.
